The top 5 reasons people surrender their pets to our facility are:

We’re moving and can’t keep our pet. If there is a move planned in your future, you must ensure you can have pets and that there aren’t any breed specific guidelines that will prevent you from keeping your pet. Ask landlords for their pet policy and ask for something in writing that indicates you meet the requirements to have a pet.

Financial hardship. Pets are expensive. They get sick, they require preventative care so they don’t get sick such as heartworm preventative and dental care, not to mention the cost of boarding should you travel and providing good food. You must take these things into consideration before taking on a new dependant.

Behavioral issues. It is truly amazing how many people will surrender their dogs or cats because of behavioral issues when the family has never provided any training to the animal or explored potential health problems that might be creating the behavior.

Dogs need to be trained on what they can and cannot do. They’re looking to their humans for guidance. This is YOUR responsibility.

When you take home a new puppy, they are a blank canvas. You have the paint brush. What they become is entirely up to you.

Whether it’s a cat urinating outside the litter box or scratching up the couch, these behaviors can usually be explained by a health condition or be easily addressed.

Not enough time. Other than moving, this is probably the most frustrating and avoidable reason owners surrender their pets. This usually results from spontaneous decisions to purchase or adopt a pet. Pets take time. They need daily care, exercise and love. If you don’t have time to do these things each and every day, you don’t need a pet.

Divorce. We receive many pets because couples divorce and in the midst of a difficult situation, their pets pay the price. Divorce is a very difficult thing to cope with, but pets are a lifetime responsibility just like your children and should not be disposed of even in times of hardship.

The Hamilton County Humane Society offers many pets looking for a loving home for reasons listed above. Find your special pet at the pet finder today.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. This local fund raising event is sponsored by Church World Service, an international relief, development, and refugee resettlement agency. This agency helps families that are displaced from their home because of violence and wars in their country or caused by neighboring countries as well as helping local agencies.

The CROP Hunger Walk addresses basic global and local human needs. Monies raised will be used to provide food and clean water to those in need. Globally, approximately 1 billion people (about one-sixth of the world’s population) lack sources of clean water. Lack of adequate food affects a similar number of the world’s population, with 16,000 children dying every day of hunger-related diseases. Although Hamilton County is one of the most affluent counties in the nation, there are roughly 12,000 individuals on food stamps. Due to economic and other conditions, the 32 food pantries in Hamilton County have struggled to maintain adequate amounts of food for those in need in the county.

Up to 25% of the money raised in this CROP Hunger Walk will be distributed to local organizations in Hamilton County.

How you can help:
* Walk the 3.7 mile route
* Support a walker with a donation
* Use online CROP walker option
* Be a spirit walker – raise funds even though you are unable to walk
* Recruit and promote the walk
* Pray for the CROP Hunter Walk and for the poor and hungry

The event will be Sunday September 27th with registration at 1:30 and the walk starts at 2:00. Parking is available at Carmel United Methodist Church at the corner of Rangeline and 126th St and the walk begins at the Carmel Gazebo. There will be a live band beginning at around 12:30 for those that would like to bring a picnic before the walk. The regional director of CWS will be present to inform the walkers about global needs.
